Cotton placemats and coasters, 'Elephants' (set for 4)

By Krittiya, this design features her favorite motif – Thai elephants. She crafts a set of four placemats with wide ears, long trunks and skinny tails. Matching coasters repeat the theme. Her material of choice is mohom cloth, a traditional Thai cloth dyed with indigo. Coconut shell buttons form the eyes.

"I love and admire elephants because they are such big animals. So my first design was inspired by elephants. I created and develop elephant figures on my clothes and home décor.

"I am Krittaya Sirisukprasert but you can call me Mam. I was born on November 10, 1965 and grew up with one elder sister in Prae province. Today I live with my husband in Baan Khwan Viang. I have a bachelor's degree in fine art, and was a kindergarten art teacher for a year after graduation. I had done packaging design for The Royal Project of Doikham for four years but I didn't feel I was skillful. So I decide to work with the blue cloth known as mohom, dyed with indigo.

"Mohom is used for shirts and blouses in farming communities, but my idea was to design more than only clothing. The fabric has its own identity, just as people have our own capabilities. I hope to become a master of mohom.

"I live my life in the normal way, and am satisfied with everything I have. I feel very happy with my work. I develop my designs incessantly, and control the quality myself. My desire is to create even more choices for shoppers. I'd like to show these designs to the whole world and also to change the Thai people's attitude toward this cloth. And I hope that people will become aware of the indigo tree's usefulness."
