Arriving with the New Year, David Solano Guizado was born in Junin on January 1, 1976. He says he has always felt an innate passion for nature. Junin abounds with beautiful stones, including onyx and travertine marble, which, he says, inspire him greatly.
"When I was a boy, we had animals – cows, sheep and rams – and I'd spend days up in the mountain pastures herding them," he recalls. "It was there that I first came into contact with stones, and I'd collect them and cut them with a file. I enjoyed seeing how the stone could be shaped, and I began to create objects to show them off. When all is said and done, every stone is attractive. By working with them, you can discover their true beauty."
The process begins by selecting the stone, and Solano does this personally in Junin, Huaraz, or Ayacucho. He examines it and chooses the part to carve, then begins sculpting it. "Personally, I prefer a smooth finish so as to better appreciate the final result," he says. "Marble is a wonderful choice. It lasts a lifetime. Artificial materials simply cannot imitate natural stone."
